Summary
Oil painting on panel, Windsor and Eton from Clewer Meadows by Moonlight, by Thomas Christopher Hofland (Worksop 1777 – Leamington 1843), 1820. The scene shows a landscape by moonlight with Windsor Castle in the distance and a pond on the left with a sailing boat in the centre and another smaller vessel in the foreground. On the bank on the right are two cows and sheep. Martin Hopkinson has pointed out that a picture of this title was exhibited at the British Institution in 1820 (no. 177 1 ft 1 in x 1 ft 4 in).
Provenance
Acquired by Richard Colt Hoare 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838) in 1820 and thence by descent.Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
