Caption
This genre painting of a young girl sitting on the ground, barefoot and out-of-doors references 18th-century notions of childhood as both natural and innocent. The goldfinch she has released from the cage is a symbol of freedom but also fragility. This picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1813.
