Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Self-portrait with a Palette (after Reynolds) after Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792), 19th century. A copy by an unknown artist after the original painting, circa 1747-49, in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The original painting was originally vertical in format and was reduced to make it horizontal at both top and bottom. The artist is seen, looking towards the viewer, holding his palette and brush in his right hand and covering his eyes with his hand as if he is looking into light.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
