Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Henry Colt Arthur Hoare (1888 - 1917) by St George Hare (Limerick 1857 – London 1933), 1917-18, the tree trunk, on the left, is inscribed wih the word 'Kismet', and a commemorative cross painted against the foliage of the tree on the upper left is inscribed on the horizontal bar: C...H.C.A.HOARE / Dorset Yeomanry / 19 - 12 -17 and, at the bottom: 3033 and signed by the artist: Hare. Presumably a posthumous commemorative portrait of the son of Sir Henry Hoare, 6th Bt, who died on active service. He stands three-quarter length with his hands behind his back and wears the military uniform of the 1st Dorset Queen's Own Yeomanry with Stourhead Gardens in the background.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
