Colt Hoare’s grandfather desperately wanted him to marry his best friend’s daughter, but Colt was devoted to Hester Lyttelton of Hagley. When she died days after giving birth to her second child, Richard was devastated and left the country.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Hon. Hester Lyttelton, Mrs Richard Colt Hoare (d. 1785) by Samuel Woodforde, RA (Ansford 1763 - Ferrara 1817). A three-quarter length portrait of Hester Lyttleton, sister of George Fulke Lyttleton and wife Richard Colt Hoare (m. 1783). The sitter stands in an interior, against red drapery, looking to the left. Her left arm rests on a pedestal and her right hand on a muff. She wears a brown dress, white blouse and black coat with fur at the shoulder and the cuffs. The portrait is described in Sir Richard Colt Hoare, History of Modern Wiltshire (Hundred of Mere), 1822, p. 71, 'Entrance Hall (a half-length portrait by Woodforde, copied and enlarged from a drawing)'.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
