Summary
Oil painting on panel, Puja performed at a Temple of Shiva by Thomas Daniell, RA (Chertsey 1749 – Kensington 1840), initialled and dated 1804. A figure, dressed in white with a red shawl, sits on a ledge in front of an indian temple building which overhangs a stream. Crockery on a basket table is placed in front of him. He is attended by another darker figure holding a large circular fan. In the middle background are two elephants with riders and in the distance a temple turrett.
Provenance
Bought by Richard Colt Hoare 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838) in 1813.Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
