Caption
Christ, already crowned with thorns, has been tied to a column, in the courtyard of Pontius Pilate’ s house, and will receive a flogging. The rendering of the torso of Christ, with its twist, or contaposto, shows more an artists’ emulation of ideal antique sculpture rather than the brutal realism of the episode of the passion of Christ. This is a copy in oils of the fresco now in the Pinacoteca, Siena.
