Summary
A pair of Argand lamps, Sheffield silver plate, each with two frosted glass chimneys, probably by Matthew Boulton (Birmingham 1728 - Birmingham 1809), circa 1785. Converted to electricity circa 1907.
Provenance
Pictured in a photograph of the Italian Room taken at Christmas 1899 (NT732428). Listed in the 1908 Inventory in the Italian Room as "The pair of 20" two-branch Sheffield Plate Electric Candelabra, with centre urn and fittings complete." Another pair (now missing) is listed in the Column Room as "The pair of handsome 22" Sheffield Plate two-branch Electric Candelabra, with Urn centre." Bequeathed to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
