Summary
A mahogany and mahogany-veneered open armchair, English, late 18th century, one of a pair. Another from this set is on loan to Attingham Park [NT 610099]. A very similar set of six standard chairs are at Saltram [NT 871288.1 - .6]. One of the latter is stamped with the initials 'I.W.' or 'J.W.' With a shaped toprail, carved with a rosette with a pierced centre and above a pierced Gothic splat, pierced with lancet arches, quatrefoils and cusps, between square-section uprights with moulded collars, both also carved with a pierced rosette. The stuff-over seat upholstered in later floral fabric. On chamfered square-section legs; the rear legs oustwept and kicked at the foot. The splat chamfered to its reverse.
