Full description
A payment from Richard Colt Hoare to Thomas Haig & Co. is recorded in June / July 1780: 'A very large mahogany wardrobe fine wood with folding doors in the middle of the upper and under parts and eleven sliding shelves with baize aprons Drawers at each end of the bottom part & Cupboards with folding doors in the Ends of the upper part one with pegs for swords, the other with 3 sliding shelves, fine spring and Tumbler locks neat wrought brass handles £39- -' It is unclear when exactly the wardrobe was moved to Stourhead but it seems quite likely that its first stop after leaving London was at Wavendon. Perhaps transferred to Colt Hoare's half brother Henry Hoare where it appears in the inventory of c.1841 in his dressing room. It is also described in the Wavendon inventory of 1852 but is not identifiable in 1895. The wardrobe first appears in the Stourhead records in 1908 where it has been demoted to the nursery.
