Summary
A cross banded rosewood, ebony and ivory games table, English, circa 1770. The top with twin hinged leaves opening as a baize lined playing surface and with retractable lopers to hold the top when open, centred by a removable chess board which lifts to reveal a recess with a leather lined backgammon board. Raised on square section tapered legs and brass castors. With an associated chess set.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
