Presented by the artist's son, from her first marriage, Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 6th Bt (1787-1871) of Killerton (NT) to his cousin, Sir Hugh Richard Hoare Bt (1787-1857), May 15th 1845;
Marks and inscriptions
on reverse; This drawing - supposed to be after a sketch by Sir Richard Colt Hoare Bt. during his tour in Italy or Sicily - was executed by his sister, the Honourable Mrs Fortescue, wife of the Hon. Matthew Fortescue, who bequeathed it to her son, Sir Thos. Dyke Ackland - It is presented by him to his cousin, Sir Hugh Richard Hoare Bt. as a token of their esteem sincere regard of many years and in the hope that it may have a permanent place in the collection of drawings at Stourhead, where the early efforts of Mrs Fortescue's pencil received that ......... and encouragement to which may be ascribed the many happy results (ex uno........sce) of its long and well continued labours.
