Summary
One of a set of six hand coloured etchings on paper, Ruins of Ancient Rome, Johann Sebastian Müller (Nuremburg c.1715 - 1792) after Giovanni Paolo Panini (Piacanza c.1692 - Rome 1765), printed for and sold by R. Sayer, H. Overton, T. Bowles, J. Bowles & Son, London, published 1753. A capriccio with, from left to right: the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, the Temple of Minerva, the Arched Rock at Cape Miseno, said to have been the residence of Aeneas and that he dyed [sic] there, the Statue of Hercules, the Temple of Concord.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
