Pen ink with grey wash, red chalk and heightened with white, An Antique Battle Scene, with Jove dispatching Lightning Bolts by John Michael Rysbrack (Antwerp 1694 – London 1770). The battle, with foot soldiers and chariots, is interrupted by a thunderbolt hurled by Jupiter into its midst.

Bought by Henry Hoare at artist's sale, 14 February 1767, lot 234 as 'A Battle in Thunder and Lightning'; thence by descent; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
