Summary
Pen and brown ink and grey wash heightened with white drawing on paper, The Entombment of Christ with Joseph of Arimathea by John Michael Rysbrack (Antwerp 1694 – London 1770), 1765. Christ is carried to the tomb; the scene is illuminated by an attendant carrying a flaming torch. According to the biblical Gospels, the man who donated his own prepared tomb for the burial of Jesus after his crucifixion.

Bought by Henry Hoare (1705-1785) at the artist's sale, 14 February 1767, lot 68; thence by descent; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
