Hand-coloured engraving, Martyrdom of St Lawrence, Jacques Blondeau after Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1596 – Rome 1669), late seventeenth century, hand-coloured by Jacob van Lint (1723 - 1790) or Hendrik Frans van Lint, Rome, Italy, 1759-1762. The original is in San Lorenzo al Foro, Rome.
Provenance
Commissioned by Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent' (1705-1785). Listed in a price list accompanying a letter from John Plimmer to Hoare, 9 June 1759 (WSA, 383.907). Listed in a studio bill enclosed with a letter from Thomas Jenkins to Hoare, 19 June 1762 (WSA, 383.907). Listed in 'The Catalogue or Particulars of the Pictures Prints Statues and other Things' attached to the Stourhead Settlement, 1784, attributed to 'Studio' (see Dodd, 2016) (WSA, 383.715). Thence by descent. Bequeathed by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947), 1946.
