Summary
Embroidered picture, Still Life with Dead Game, Mary Bampfylde (née Knight) (died 1806), circa 1771. A dead yellowhammer, pheasant and lapwing on a grassy background. In a giltwood frame with gadrooned outer mouldings and leaf-and-tongue inner mouldings, probably contemporary to the picture. On 30 November 1771, Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent' (1705-1785) wrote in a letter to Harriot [Bruce?] "Mrs. Bampfyld[e] has sent me some of her work, a pheasant, a lapwing, & a yellow hammr. still life wonderfully fine. A gold frame & plate glass is ordered for it."

Given to Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent' (1705-1785) by the artist, circa 1771; By descent to Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947); Bequeathed to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
