Summary
Hand-coloured etching and engraving, The Emperor Augustus has the Gates of the Temple of Janus closed, and Makes a Sacrifice to Peace, who Flies down from the Sky, Jakob (Jacob) Frey (1681-1752) after Carlo Maratta (Camerano 1625 – Rome 1713), 1738, hand-coloured by Jacob van Lint (1723 - 1790) or Hendrik Frans van Lint, Rome, Italy, 1759-1762. The inscription cut from the print is pasted to the backboard. The original is in Palazzo Colonna, Rome; a version is at the Musee des Beaux Arts, Lille.
Provenance
Commissioned by Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent' (1705-1785). Listed in 'The Catalogue or Particulars of the Pictures Prints Statues and other Things' attached to the Stourhead Settlement, 1784, attributed to 'Studio' (see Dodd, 2016) (WSA, 383.715). Thence by descent. Bequeathed by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947), 1946.
