Summary
Hand-coloured etching and engraving, Aurora Leading the Carriage of Apollo Surrounded by the Hours, Jakob (Jacob) Frey (1681-1752) after Guido Reni (Bologna 1575 – Bologna 1642), 1722, hand-coloured by Jacob van Lint (1723 - 1790) or Hendrik Frans van Lint, Rome, Italy, 1759-1762. The inscription cut from the print is pasted to the backboard. The original fresco is in the Casino dell'Aurora of the Pallazo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi, Rome.
Provenance
Commissioned by Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent' (1705-1785). Listed in a price list accompanying a letter from John Plimmer to Hoare, 9 June 1759 (WSA, 383.907). Listed in a studio bill enclosed with a letter from Thomas Jenkins to Hoare, 19 June 1762 (WSA, 383.907). Listed in an undated bill (WSA, 38304.253). Listed in 'The Catalogue or Particulars of the Pictures Prints Statues and other Things' attached to the Stourhead Settlement, 1784, attributed to 'Studio' (see Dodd, 2016) (WSA, 383.715). Thence by descent. Bequeathed by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947), 1946.
