Summary
Hand-coloured etching, The Victory of Alexander over Darius of Persia at the Battle of Issus, Pietro Aquila after Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1596 – Rome 1669), 1650-1692, hand-coloured by Jacob van Lint (1723 - 1790) or Hendrik Frans van Lint, Rome, Italy, 1759-1762. Two etchings joined and hand-coloured. The original is in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Rome.
Provenance
Commissioned by Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent' (1705-1785). Listed in 'The Catalogue or Particulars of the Pictures Prints Statues and other Things' attached to the Stourhead Settlement, 1784, attributed to 'Studio' (see Dodd, 2016) (WSA, 383.715). Thence by descent. Bequeathed by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947), 1946.
