Summary
Pencil or black chalk and grey wash, The Roman Gate at Terracina (?) by Carlo Labruzzi (Rome 1748 – Perugia 1817). On a road leading to what looks like a half-ruined town gate, with a walled enclosure with palm trees on the left, two men ride towards the gate on laden mules or donkeys. One of the drawings done when Labruzzi accompanied Colt Hoare from Rome to Brindisi in 1789. This collection was sold in 1883. This is from the set of finished wash drawings and watercolours sent by Labruzzi to the printseller, W. Palmer, no.163, Strand, to show potential subscribers to the sets of plates of Antiquities of the Via Appia what they might expect. Subsequently lost to view, 100 of them resurfaced, in four volumes, in a bombed-out house in London during the War. These included half a dozen drawings done in or around Terracina, nos.: 67. On the road near Terracina at the site mentioned by Horace (see Satires, I. V.); 68. Aquaduct [sic] and tomb near the Aqua di Feronia, with a view of Terracina; 69. Two tombs near Terracina; 70. Tomb near Terracina; 71. The Roman Gate of Terracina; 72. The Cathedral of San Cesareo and the ancient Forum of Terracina. The four volumes were bought by John Manning, broken up, and the drawings offered for sale individually. This one was bought from the Manning gallery in 1960.
