Etching and engraving on paper, A View of Stour Head in the County of Wilts, the Seat of Henry Hoare Esqr., etched and engraved and published by (François) Francis Vivarès (Montpellier 1709 –London 1780) after Copplestone Warre Bampfylde (Taunton 1720 - Hestercombe 1791), 1777 (1775). Lettered below image with title in English and French, production detail: 'Bampfyld pinxit', 'F. Vivares Sculpsit 1777' and publication line: 'Published by F. Vivares as the Act directs Feby. 14th 1777.', numbered in lower left corner: 'No. 38'. After an original watercolour on paper, Stourhead Pleasure Grounds, Wiltshire, View to the Pantheon, Copplestone Warre Bampfylde (Taunton 1720 - Hestercombe 1791), 1775 (730729). A handwritten label affixed to the backboard reads 'The Property of / Sir Henry Hoare, Bt / Stourhead, Stourton / Wilts'.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
