Summary
Watercolour on paper, Pays de Valais, near the Lake of Geneva, by John Robert Cozens (London 1752 – London 1797). The view of the Rhone Valley, looking towards Sion and Martigny. In 1776 Cozens visited Switzerland and Itly with the classical scholar and antiquarian Richard Payne Knight (1751 - 1824) and again in 1782 with William Backford (1760 - 1844). He returned to London in 1783 and no much is known of his activity until 1794 when he suffered severe mental illness and was cared for by Dr Thomas Monro until his death.
