Summary
Pencil, watercolour, gouache, with touches of pen and ink and varnish on two sheets of paper, joined vertically, laid down on canvas, The Interior of the Colosseum, Rome, by Abraham Louis Ducros (Yverdon, Switzerland 1748 – Lausanne 1810), circa 1786. In the centre is an altar before which a congregation is kneeling. In the left foregound, two elegantly dressed women are shown giving alms to a begging family, while their male companion admires the Colosseum; in the background a crowd of people are taking part in a religious ceremony. Provenance
Painted for Richard Colt Hoare (1758 - 1838) in around 1786; and thence by descent; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
