Summary
Watercolour on paper, Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Bt in his library at Stourhead by Francis Nicholson (Pickering 1753 – London 1844). Looking towards the French windows, the Library is seen with its coffered ceiling and with the large Chippendale desk placed at the far end of the room. Sir Richard is seated at a small table in the front of the chimneypiece above which are arranged the Funzioni del Serenissimo drawings by Canaletto (bought in 1787 and sold in 1883), in two columns of five each, flanking the portrait of Doge Pietro Landi (also sold in 1883) in a rococo frame. The three marble Niobids now in the Picture Gallery are placed on the mantelpiece.
