Summary
Pastel on paper (oval), Sir Henry Hugh Hoare, 3rd Bt (1762-1841) as the infant Mercury by William Hoare of Bath, RA (Eye 1707 – Bath 1792). Half-length, turned slightly to the right, gazing to the left, in blue cloak and winged helmet, his caduceus over his right shoulder. One of a series of portraits of the children of Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt., in fancy dress. By an estimation of the ages of the children, these portraits must have been painted in the early 1770s.
