Summary
Chalk and coloured wash on paper, Probably Henrietta Anne Hoare, Mrs, The Hon. Matthew Fortescue (1762/70-1841) by John Downman, RA (Ruabon, North Wales 1750 – Wrexham 1824), signed and dated: J.Downman 1792. A hHalf-length portrait of a lady. The features bear a resemblance to other children of Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt, and considering its date, this may be a portrait of his only daughter, Henrietta Ann (see STO/P/266 which shows her as a child). She was married, first, in 1785, to Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, Bt., of Killerton (d.1794); and secondly, in 1795, to the Hon. Matthew Fortescue, brother of Earl Fortescue.
