Summary
Oil painting on paper laid down on canvas, Head of Saint Francis in Ecstacy, possibly Italian (Lombard) school, circa 1600. A representation of Saint Francis of Assisi (1181/2-1226) receiving the stigmata, the five wounds suffered by Christ at the crucifixion. The head of Saint Francis is tilted upwards to the right, his eyes, brimming with tears, are raised and his lips are slightly parted. The Saint's bearded face is illuminated by a soft light from the right whilst the rest of the head and neck are thrown into deep shadow.

Acquired by Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838) either between 1785-87 or 1788-91; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
