Summary
A pair of vases, black basalt (stoneware) with encaustic paint, Wedgwood, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, circa 1770-1780. Of 'lebes gamikos' shape, Shape No. 49 in Wedgwood's 'Shape Number One Drawing Book,' with two handles raised on a pedestal base, painted with Classical figures and borders. Unmarked. The decoration is taken from illustrations in Sir William Hamilton and Pierre-Francois Hugues d'Hancarville, 'Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman Antiquities from the Cabinet of the Honourable William Hamilton' (1767). Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent', purchased all volumes of Hamilton in 1770.

Probably purchased by Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent' (1705-1785). Listed in the 'Inventory of Furniture, Bedding, Carpets, China, Plate, Pictures, Curios, and other effects on the premises of the mansion,' January 1908, in the Cabinet Room, as ‘The Pair of 8" Loop Handled Wedgwood Do.' Bequeathed by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947), 1946.
