Summary
Cup, black basalt (stoneware), Wedgwood, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, circa 1770-1775. With a moulded rim on a square plinth, applied with a medallion depicting two seated male figures, a serpent and an altar representing the 'Sacrifice of Aesculapius'; a medallion with this title is No. 28 in the 1773 Catalogue. Base embossed 'WEDGWOOD & BENTLEY ETRURIA' (partially obscured by screw) and impressed '12'.
Provenance
Probably purchased by Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent' (1705-1785) in 1770. The 'Ledger Extracts from the Accounts of Henry Hoare II, 1749 - 70' records a payment on 2 May 1770 'By Mr Wedgwood for vases...£7 9s 6d'. Thence by descent. Listed in the 1902 Inventory in the Library as '6 ½ in. fine old black Wedgwood cup with oval medallion of two figures'. Bequeathed by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947), 1946.
