Summary
Covered sugar bowl, hard paste porcelain with gilding, Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur (K.P.M.), Berlin, Germany, 1795, from a tea service comprising: a covered coffee pot, a covered sugar bowl, three covered cups, three saucers, and an octagonal dish. Monogrammed 'HH' for Henry Hoare (probably Sir Henry Hugh Hoare, 3rd Bt (1762-1841)) and gilt bands. Base with sceptre makers mark in underglaze blue. The decoration is not common for Berlin wares, which were usually sold as blank or unpainted porcelain, and it is possible that it was decorated outside the factory, possibly in England.
Provenance
Listed in the ‘Inventory of Heirlooms at Stourhead directed to be taken by the Will of the late Sir Richard Colt Hoare Bart.’, 1838, in the China Cupboard, as ‘Set of Tea China marked H.H. consisting of one Honey Pot cover and stand Coffee pot and cover 4 coffee cups with handles covers and saucers.' Listed in the 'Inventory of Furniture, Bedding, Carpets, China, Plate, Pictures, Curios, and other effects on the premises of the mansion,' January 1908, in the Cabinet Room, as ‘One 5in. Sevres HAH white and gold hot milk jug and cover, 3 covered Sevres cups and saucers, HAH, one honey pot, HAH', one 6in. octagon dish, HAH.'
