Summary
Musical table clock. Quarter chiming table clock with verge escapement, by James Smith, London. Chiming quarters on 8 bells with locking plate and rack striking hours on a single bell, change lever for two chime options at 3 o’clock position. Break arch dial with silvered chapter ring and moon disc and age of moon in the arch. Chapter ring has Roman hour numerals, Arabic 5 minute numerals and a minute track. The date is shown around inner edge of chapter ring and indicated by straight pointer concentric with minute hand. Dial has matted centre, leaf and scroll spandrels and blued steel hour and minute hands. Mahogany veneered case with bell top, 4 pineapple finials, rococo style inserts in top door corners, fretwork sound frets to each side, decorative moulding at the door edges, brass carrying handle and standing on bracket feet. Circa 1775.
