Summary
Oil painting on canvas laid down panel, Trompe l'oeil (Architecture) by Martin Battersby (1914 - Lewes 1982), 1950-60. A painting on the theme of architecture, with a classical medallion, scroll, architect's drawing tools, drawings or prints. Plaque at top containing face with draped collar. Below plaque are four drawings overlapping each other, top left depicts a woman with torso made from a column and a hat from a capital. Written at the bottom of the drawing is SACERDO......E and A LA GRECQ.... The missing letters of which are hidden under other items. The drawing bottom left contains the words PERSPEC.. PICTO.. ARCHITEC... ROME... the missing letters being underneath the adjacent drawing which is of a fountain within an arch. Over the top of the drawings are two transparent set squares set above a crossed T square and roll of paper.
