Caption
This painting depicts the theme of music, with a classical portrait medallion, a guitar, a recorder, a mask, miniature violin, sheet music and frontispiece to the Kreutzer Sonata, with the inscription: ANDANTE CON VARAZIONI / KREUTZER SONATA / EDWIN M LOTT, a butterfly and various drawings or prints. This is one of a set of seven monochrome trompe l’oeil (deceive the eye) paintings that were painted for the architect Denis Martineau (1907-1975), the previous owner and donor of Mompesson House. The others themes include: Architecture, Agriculture, Art and War flanked by two paintings of urns in a niches which may have reflected the commissioner’s interests and loosely refer to some of the liberal and mechanic arts.

Framed and glazed.
