Summary

Pen and brown ink (faded) drawing over traces of pencil on paper, John Chute (1701-1776) by Rosalba Carriera (Venice 1675 - Venice 1757), inscribed: K Chute Li 10 Lugli: 1741 and inscribed on the back with John Chute's name and date 1741. This is a rare drawing (as opposed to pastel) by the Venetian female artist. It was executed while Chute was in Venice with Thomas Gray and his cousin Francis Whithed of whom there is a pastel by the same artist at the Vyne. It was formerly owned by Horace Walpole of Strawberry Hill whom he had jsut been with at Reggio. John Chute's movements in Italy in 1741 are fairly well charted: "In Short Notes of my life, Horace Walpole wrote: "in May 1741 we went to the fair at Reggio. There Mr Gray left me, going to Venice, with Mr Francis Whithed and Mr Chute, for the festival of the Assumption". That Chute was still there early in June is certain for on 6th June Lady Pomfret wrote from Venice to her friend Lady Hartford: "The English here are Lord Lincoln and Mr Shute." John Chute returned to England in 1746.

Provenance

Commissioned by the sitter who was in Venice with Francis Whithed; Horace Walpole; Strawberry Hill sale, The Round Tower (21st day, Lot 1), 18 May 1842, (with five other sketches): bought by Reverend H. Cholmondeley; Purchased by William Wiggett Chute, March 1844; the entry in his account book reads sketch of Mr Chute from Strawberry Hill by Rosalba: £1.15; Bequeathed with The Vyne, estate and contents by Sir Charles Chute, 1st Bt (1879-1956).
