Summary
Pastel on paper, Margaret Nicol, Marchioness of Carnarvon (c.1736-1768) by Arthur Pond (London 1701 – Rome 1758), 1753. A head-and-shoulders portrait, wearing a pink dress and pearls. The daughter and considerable heiress of John Nichol, a cousin of the Chutes, she was at one time engaged to Francis Whithed and after his death John Chute tried to arrange a marriage between her and Lord Orford. This being unsuccessful, she married James Bridges, Marquess of Caernarvon, afterwards 3rd Duke of Chandos, in 1753. She died before her husband succeeded to the Dukedom.

1880s in the Further Drawing Room, as: "Crayon Head, by Rosalba", and in the Dining Room, as: "Miss Nicholl" (later Countess of Caernarvon, engaged to Mr Whithed, and intended for Lord Orford)" [without attribution]; bequeathed with The Vyne, estate and contents by Sir Charles Chute, 1st Bt (1879-1956)
