Summary
Vase, known as a vase cloche, soft-paste porcelain, dark blue glaze (bleau nouveau), Sévres, France, 1763-65, mounted with early Neo-classical mounts in the gout-grec style by Jean Dulac, rue St Honoré, Paris c.1765. The vase cloche was used to form a potpourri with additional ormolu mounts. The earliest reference to this form was one supplied to Madame de Pompadour in late 1763 now at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut, USA.
Provenance
From a garniture purchased in Paris by Horace Walpole in 1764 and given to his friend John Chute of The Vyne and by descent to Sir Charles Chute. Bequested to the National Trust in 1956 with The Vyne House and Estate.
