Summary

A vinyl record, the album Africa's Blood by Lee Perry. The album contains fourteen songs with seven on each side. There is a circular white and orange paper label in the centre of each side of the record, with these labels having a Trojan Records logo at the top and a list of the song titles on that side of the record printed below with songwriting credits in brackets after each title. The albums catalogue number (TBL 166) is printed to the right of centre on each label. Lee Perry was a record producer, singer and songwriter born as Rainford Hugh Perry in 1936 in Jamaica. He became known as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and was renowned for his use of innovative studio techniques and his production style. He was a pioneer in the mid 1970’s development of ‘dub’ music which involved remixing and adding studio effects to create new instrumental or vocal versions of existing reggae songs. He worked with and recorded a wide variety of artists including Bob Marley and The Wailers, The Congo’s, The Clash and The Beastie Boys and remained active as a producer and performer until his death in August 2021. Africa’s Blood was a studio album recorded and produced by Lee Perry and released on the Trojan Records label.

Provenance

Vinyl record recorded by Lee Perry and released on the Trojan Records label in 1972. Purchased by the National Trust Museum of Childhood via Discogs on 31st August 2020 as part of the Collecting Cultures Exploring Childhoods project.
