Summary
A vinyl record, the twelve inch single version of Rapper's Delight by The Sugarhill Gang. The record contains the long version of Rapper's Delight on Side One with the short version of the song on Side Two. Each side of the record has a circular pale blue paper label in the centre with these labels having a colour Sugarhill Records logo at the top and the song title on each side printed at the bottom, with song writer credits printed next to the title in brackets. The records catalogue number (SHL 101) is printed to the right of centre on each label, with details of the songs duration and its beats per minute (BPM) given immediately below. There is a Pye Records logo printed at the bottom of each label. The Sugarhill Gang are an American hip-hop group who formed in 1979 initially comprised of the three members Henry ‘Big Bank Hank’ Jackson, Michael ‘Wonder Mike’ Wright and Guy ‘Master Gee’ O’ Brien. They were active until 1985 but reformed in 1994 with a different line up and continue to perform. Rapper’s Delight was the debut single by the band and was produced by Sylvia Robinson and is credited with introducing rap and hip-hop music to a wider and more mainstream listening audience.

Vinyl record recorded by The Sugarhill Gang on 2nd August 1979. Released on the Sugarhill Records label on 16th September 1979. Purchased by the National Trust Museum of Childhood via Discogs on 6th August 2020 as part of the Collecting Cultures Exploring Childhoods project.
