Summary

A cardboard sleeve for a vinyl record, the album ‘Bang On A Drum’. The record features songs from the long running BBC children’s TV programmes Play School and Play Away and the front cover of the sleeve has a colour photograph of some of the toy characters from these programmes including Humpty Dumpty, Big Ted and Little Ted, with the toys sitting on and around a drum kit that has a yellow Play School logo on the bass drum. At the top of the front cover there is a ‘BBC records and tapes’ logo in yellow letters on a black background and below this is printed ‘BANG ON A DRUM’ in blue letters and ‘Songs from PLAY SCHOOL & PLAY AWAY’ in red letters. In the top right corner there is a white price label from The HMV Shop for £1.99. The rear of the sleeve has the records title printed in black letters in the top left corner and a ‘BBC records and tapes’ logo and its catalogue number (REC 242) in the top right corner. In the centre on the rear is a list of the songs that appear on the record and details of who is singing each song and who wrote it. Around the edge of the rear of the sleeve are black and white head and shoulder portraits of the various Play School and Play Away presenters who appear on the records including Johnny Ball, Brian Cant and Toni Arthur.

Provenance

Cardboard sleeve for the vinyl record Bang On A Drum released by BBC Enterprises Ltd. in 1976. Purchased by the National Trust Museum of Childhood as part of the Collecting Cultures 'Exploring Childhoods' project.
