Summary

A painted wooden collection box for the National Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Children (NSPCC) charity. The design of the box has the carved figure of a young boy standing on a square plinth. The boy has brown hair and is wearing a yellow top, green shorts and socks and brown shoes. The sock on his left leg is rolled down to the ankle. In his hands the boy is holding a green box which in chipped yellow lettering on the front says 'N.S.P.C.C.’ and underneath this 'NATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO CHILDREN’. The box is badly scratched but the names ‘Paul’, ‘Lucy’, ‘Tony’ and ‘Sue’ have been etched onto its front. In the top of the box there is a coin slot where money donations can be inserted. The plinth is painted green and on the front and two sides the words 'WE NEED Your HELP’ are printed in yellow and below this the address ‘N.S.P.C.C. 1, RIDING HOUSE STREET, LONDON, W.1’. On the rear of the plinth painted in black is 'X 133'. There is also a panel with a keyhole which can be unlocked to retrieve a container inside into which any donations would fall. The NSPCC is a UK children's charity founded in 1884.

Provenance

Originally issued by the National Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Children (NSPCC). Purchased by the National Trust Museum of Childhood via ebay on 19th August 2020 as part of the Collecting Cultures 'Exploring Childhoods' project.
