Summary
A wood and paper 'penny-a-week’ collection box for the Church of England's Children Society. The top of the box has a slot cut into it through which money can be inserted and lists the society’s patrons (Their Majesty's The King and Queen and H.M. Queen Mary). The front of the box has an image of a female child with the slogan 'GIVE THEM A FAIR CHANCE' written in yellow letters on a black banner background. On the rear of the box there are details of what to do if the box is not collected. On one end of the box is printed the society’s prayer and on the other end the aims, methods and results of the society. On the underside of the box a piece of paper has been glued on. This has some hand written details on it but most is indecipherable. It includes the name 'Smith', the address ‘185 Welland Park Rd’ and the year '1950' all written in blue pen. Also written in pencil is the following: '£2 = / = 61/2'.
Provenance
Issued for collections by The Church of England Children's Society circa 1950. Purchased by the National Trust Museum of Childhood from The Northampton Bookshop on 27th June 2019 as part of the Collecting Cultures 'Exploring Childhoods' project.
