Summary
A square shaped magic lantern style glass slide manufactured for the Dr. Barnardo’s Homes charity. The slide contains an image of a homeless child standing on some steps next to a bearded man dressed in a suit and wearing a bowler hat. The child is barefoot and is begging and the man is handing the child some money with his left hand while in his right hand he is holding a walking stick. The title of the slide 'GIVE ME A PENNY' is printed along its bottom edge on one side. On the other side the number '1110-01' is written in black ink on a white label in the bottom left corner. Dr. Barnardo’s Homes is a British charity founded in 1866 by Thomas John Barnardo.
Provenance
Manufactured for Dr. Barnardo's Homes circa early twentieth century. Purchased by the National Trust Museum of Childhood from Philip Banham on 7th March 2020 as part of the Collecting Cultures 'Exploring Childhoods' project.
