Summary
One of a group of four wagons made from wood and bobbins, along with four connecting 'rods'. This wagon consists of a rectangular piece of wood, stained half red and half green, with two sets of wheels made from small bobbins (one pair stained red and the other green) which rotate on axles made from unstained pieces of dowel. On top of the piece of wood are two larger bobbins, stained yellow and held in place upright with dowel through the middle. There is a short piece of unstained dowel inserted at each short end of the wooden piece. These are used to attach the connecting 'rods' (catalogued as 672241.5).
Provenance
Part of a large collection of handmade toys and puzzles donated to the Museum of Childhood in 2019 by Nigel Briggs. They were made by John Doble, father of the donor's wife Hanne. He had worked with Nancy Catford (of the Nursery Schools Association), the designer of the toys, during the Second World War. Together they produced paper patterns that people could use at home as templates for thin ply patterns which could in turn be used to make their own wooden toys. Other toys were made from dowels and empty cotton reels.
