Summary
A 'Boutique Barbie' doll in its original packaging. The doll is black, has long hair and is dressed in a multi coloured dress. She is carrying a yellow, orange and pink bag and has a red belt with a silver 'Barbie' buckle. The box is yellow/orange cardboard with a cellophane window through which the doll can be seen. It has 'Barbie Boutique' written across the bottom on the front, on the top, the bottom and down one side. There is a makers logo (Mattel) in red at the bottom left corner of the front of the box. The rear of the box has a colour image of three ‘Boutique Barbie’ dolls in different outfits above text saying 'Groovy', 'Trendy' and 'Chic'. Barbie is a fashion doll launched by the American toy company Mattel Inc. in March 1959. Her partner 'Ken' was launched two years later in 1961.This doll is representative of the increase of diversity that was seen in the Barbie brand during the 1990's.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust Museum of Childhood via ebay in Spetember 2018 as part of the Collecting Cultures 'Exploring Childhoods' project.
