Summary
A fabric doll, representing Princess Margaret Rose, daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, when she was aged about 8 years old. She has a pressed felt face with inset blue glass eyes and painted facial features. Her hair is made from light brown mohair. Her body and limbs are covered in pale pink velveteen fabric, over stuffing and a frame made possibly from hard plastic. She has a swivel head, and is jointed at the shoulders and hips. She is wearing a pink, single-breasted woollen coat with a Peter Pan collar, over a pale pink cotton dress with a pattern of small dark pink flowers. Under this she has a white nylon vest and knickers which match her dress. She has pale pink nylon ankle socks and pink felt shoes, fastened at the side of the ankle with a tiny white plastic button. Her bonnet is made from the same pink wool as her coat and is fastened by pink felt ties under her chin. She has a manufacturer's label sewn to the base of her right foot, and there are a few small holes (insect damage - moth or carpet beetle) on her coat and shoes.
Provenance
Donated to the National Trust Museum of Childhood in 2018 by Barbara Perkes and her sister. Along with the other doll, 671990.1, it was given to the donors in 1938 by their parents, who had been in England for the coronation of George VI and bought the dolls when travelling in Scotland.
