Summary
A knitted doll which is possibly a pyjama/nightdress case. It is mainly knitted in black wool, with patterns at the hem and waist worked in blue and pink, and resembles a woman. Her only facial features are 'googly' black and white plastic eyes. Her body, head and arms are knitted in one piece and stuffed. She does not have the lower half of her body - this consists of a skirt/bag, open at the base, which is lined with pink cotton fabric, and has a large pink pocket at the front. There is a belt made from plaited pink and blue wool round her waist, and a similar plait tied in a bow at her neck. On her head is turban, knitted in blue, black and pink stripes, to which are attached two metal earrings, made from small curtain rings.
Provenance
Donated to the National Trust Museum of Childhood in 2017 by Barry Watts MBE. The donor believes the doll was made for his mother Barbara (1928-2017) in the 1930s or 1940s by her mother Caroline Jesse Pritchard (1887-1959).
