Summary
A Japanese bisque-headed doll with painted features and rooted hair (circa 1985). Sent as a gift (through the post) as a thanks from a Japanese student who had stayed with the donor for a month. This type of doll would have been given as a gift on "Hinamatsuri" (Girls' Festival) to a Japanese girl of 7 as a 'coming of age' gift. "Hinamatsuri" is held each year on the 3rd March. The doll is standing upright, with her feet attached to a black base. She is wearing a kimono mainly in oranges and reds, and has a small fan tucked into her belt or 'Obi'. The doll comes with a small black free-standing plaque with Japanese writing painted on it, and a small square swatch of the fabric on her kimono.
Provenance
The doll was sent as a gift, through the post, as thanks from a Japanese student who had stayed with the donor for a month. The donor, Mrs Sarah Puxley, donated the doll to the Museum of Childhood in January 2012.
