Summary
A girl's petticoat - one part of a girl's Voortrekker national costume donated by the South African Embassy in 1978. The petticoat is is made from white starched cotton with a plain sleeveless round necked bodice fastening at the back with four large hooks and eyes. The full skirt, which is gathered in to the bodice, has two broad tucks and finishes with a broad gathered frill edge with white cotton broderie anglaise. There are two darts at the front and back of the bodice. Related garments - inventory numbers - 667760, 667782, 667786 and photograph of boy and girls wearing the costumes 668220. Voortrekker - a member of one of the groups of Dutch-speaking people who migrated by wagon from the Cape Colony into the interior from 1836 onwards, in order to live beyond the borders of British rule.
