Summary
A boy's costume consisting of a hat, neckerchief, jacket and trousers - a boy's Voortrekker national costume donated by the South African Embassy in 1978. The hat is made of brushed leather with a broad brim and a low crown. The hat is circular. The brim is made of two layers of leather fixed with seven circular lines of machine stitching. It carries a hat band in the same material which has been glued. The dressed leather surface occurs inside the headband and crown of the hat. The hat is of a natural leather colour. The neckerchief is made of dark green machine woven material with a floral pattern of small alternating white daisy type flowers and groups of three beige, red and brown flowers, sometimes with a blue centre. The neckerchief is fastened with a woggle made of the same leather as the hat. The jacket is beige coloured and made of twill material with full sleeves, two pockets, an open neck and four buttons and four button holes to fasten. The material from which the jacket is made has a white straight weave backing. The trousers made of a man-made brown material. At the waist the trousers have two buttons at the rear and four at the front which fasten the front flap over the front waist band, this fastens with two buttons. This waistband has a similar white material backing to that carried in the jacket. The flap sides create a simulated pocket. The shirt for this costume is recorded as inventory number 667784 and the related photograph of a boy and girl wearing the national costumes as 668220. Voortrekker - a member of one of the groups of Dutch-speaking people who migrated by wagon from the Cape Colony into the interior from 1836 onwards, in order to live beyond the borders of British rule.
